Humor in the novel

The tone of To Kill A Mockingbord is humorous at times. Discuss a funny scene that you recall and explain the significance of humor in the novel.

  1. I think a funny part of To Kill a Mockingbird is when Miss. Caroline Fisher is in the classroom and she find the cootie in Walter Cunningham's hair. She starts screaming and freaking out because there is a cootie in his hair. I thought it was funny that she got so upset about a little cootie in his hair, and i thought she over reacted just a little bit. MB

  2. I love, in chapter 15, when Scout, Jem, and Dill go uptown because Jem gets a bad feeling about Atticus. Scout just jumps into the mob, thinking it was the familiar faces from the other night. She realizes her mistake, but sees Mr. Cunningham and tries to talk to him. He ignores her at first, but eventually she gets through to him and he breaks up the mob and tells them to go home. I love how a little eight year old girl can break up a mob with just her innocent intentions.

  3. one of the funny part in the book was when Dill Scout and Jem wanted to give Boo Radley a note telling him to 'come out', so the took a fishing rod and tried to put in on a window sill. Dill was and Scout were being lookouts and all of a sudden dill started ringing the bell (alarm that someone was coming) really hard...Jem and Scout look over to see Atticus standing over Dill. Even though it was serious because they were in trouble it made me laugh a little.

  4. I thought the part when Jem, Dill, and Scout were sneaking into the backyard of the Radley house. I thought it was funny when they were attempting to run away from the mysterious shadow that appeared as Jem was trying to take a peak in the window. While trying to escape Jem's pants got caught on the chicken wire fence and they ripped off and Jem had to run to Dill's aunts house in his skivvies. NR

  5. Yeah the funniest thing I can think of is Chapther 14 when Dil comes back and is found under Scout's bed. It amazes me that a kid from Mississippi can buy a train ticket and then hitch hike the rest of the way to Maycomb on his own, like in "Under the Same Moon" the movie, in the movie a little mexican boy in mexico sneeks across the border into america hitch hikes out runs the police finds a job and a place to stay and all this unimaginable stuff that he does to get to his mother in L.A. in America on his own at first and then travels with an illegal immagrant it was kind of fake. Well the connection is what made me laugh between the book and the movie. hahahhahah.

  6. The funniest part of the second part is when they find Dill. Before that scene the book has a melancholy feel to it and it loses interest, but when they find Dill it lightens the mood of the book and keeps your interest strong.

  7. I think that the part when Scout is at Finch's Landing with some of her relatives, and begins to fight with Francis is one of the humorous parts of the book. I find it funny that when Francis antagonizes Scout to the point where Scout chases him, he goes and hides inside the kitchen where Scout isn't allowed. I like how Francis acts like he's all tough and challenges Scout, and then goes and hides from her. Then when Aunt Alexandra comes to check on them Francis starts complaining about Scout trying to hurt him. I think that the humor in the book helps the reader to keep interested in the book and pay attention to all the racism and bad things going on. CJ

  8. Nothing strikes me as humorous immediately, but after I've read the whole paragraph, it's meaning comes out. What I do see as humorous, are little lines that are not meant to be funny in the context they are, but if you first read it wrong it can be really funny. some lines that are supposed to be funny aren't if you read it wrong. I think this book really does need some humor in it because it talks about some pretty serious issues that can get boring after a while of reading.

  9. I think that there aren’t many humorous parts in this book. If I had to pick a funny part it would have to be when Scout and Jem are getting ready to go to bed in Chapter 14 and Scout gets out of bed, she steps on something that moved, and she thought it was a mouse or a snake. She gets Jem to look under her bed, it wasn’t a snake or a mouse it was Dill.

  10. One funny part in the novel is when Miss Caroline screams "It's alive!". It adds humor to the story because it shows how weak the character is and how she doesn't fullfill the position of a strong and strict teacher. With all of the brave students around her she seems very small and weak.

  11. "...pass the damn ham, please..." was a part I laughed at in chapter 9. It's funny that Scout doesn't realize the meaning behind the words, but she says them anyway... that was me 8 years ago. Another part I liked in chapter 15 was when Atticus got jumped by the group of Cunninghams; well almost did. After the Cunninghams left, and Mr. Underwood was above the scene with his shotgun, and he said, "You're damn tootin' they wont! Had you covered all the time Atticus!" This I didn't see coming, but I had to laugh. -a.b

  12. A funny scene that I recall is actually pretty early in the book. I really like the part when Scout is beating up Walter Cunningham. I think it's awesome, and reminds me of my mom and myself a little bit when I was younger. My mom tells me stories how she used to beat up the boys whenever they gave her a hard time, and I never got so far as to doing that but if one of them made me mad enough I would kick them in the shins as hard as I could. As I got older, I obviously grew out of that phase. But I still can, to this very day, beat every single one of the boys in my grade in a running contest :] -POR!

  13. It was funny when Scout and Jem made the snow men that looked like their neighbors. They had never seen snow before. -ws

  14. Someone mentioned it up above, but I love the part about Burris Ewell's cooties. It's not Miss Caroline's reaction that amuses me so much as the way Little Chuck Little handles her. It always reminds me that little kids can have a better handle on what's going on if they understand the context of a situation better than an adult. CVP

  15. I thought Scout's and Dill's relationship was humorous; the way they were certain that they would be married. I thought it was cute, because they were so young.

  16. When Jem and Scout learned what a morphodite was and then made a snowman of what they thought one looked like.

  17. I think it was funny when the mob comes to the jail and Scout talks to Mr. Cunningham. This part was funny to me because a 7 year old broke up a an angry mob of old men.

  18. The play scene where Scout plays the ham and falls asleep, thus missing her cue was funny. As the book's issues are deep (segregation, the Great Depression, etc.), a few humerous scenes allow the reader to remember that this story does revolve around children. ~Meg B =)

  19. I thought that the part where Scout and Jem go to such an extensive length in order to build a snowman was humerous. They were definately devoted. The humor of the book adds a lighter touch to serious themes.

  20. I preferred the book over the movie because the book had much more detail. In the book, they include characters such as Aunt Alexandre and Uncle Jack Finch which in the movie, those characters are almost completely eradicated.
I preferred my interpretation of scouts voice and the way that Boo looked. The book had more emotion then the movie and i prefer thinking in color then black and white.

  21. The scene that was most funny to me was when Scout lost her dress and walked home in the ham costume...followed by Mr. Ewell attacking her and Jem.

  22. A funny scene for me (i'm not sure if this is supposed to be funny) is when (in the movie) they show scout seeing Boo for the first time, and they just hold the scene of them staring at each other for about 30 seconds. She looks completely awe struck, when in reality i would find it creepy to have some guy standing in my house and not knowing he was there for the longest time.

  23. I think a comic relief part of the book is Dill and Scout's relationship and how they say they are married and everything. It's sort of a cute relationship since they are both young and innocent.

  25. I thought that when Scout was explaining Uncle Jack Finch it was rather humorous because she tells how Uncle Jack tells her all the funny stories when he is taking a splinter out of her finger. She says that this helps her not even notice the pain.

  26. I think the part when Scout beats up Walter Cunningham in the beginning is kind of funny because she didn't seem like the type of girl that would be really into fighting.

  27. One of the parts in the book that I find funny is when Scout rolls down the hill and nearly onto the Radley's porch and sits there, dazed while Boo looks on, amused.R.M
